Competitions

Mason holds multiple competitions that provide opportunities for students and alumni to gain firsthand experience in the world of entrepreneurship.

Area businesses frequently provide mentors and judges to university teams. The right competition could help you build a career network, find an internship, or land a job.

By preparing for and participating in a competition, you'll learn to:

  • Identify market needs.
  • Develop prototypes
  • Work on go-to-market strategies.
  • Gain presentation and communication skills.

Some of our standouts include:

Deans' Business Plan Competition

This is Mason's largest early-stage venture contest. Business ideas can be from any discipline and may include non-profit and social-based ventures. The competition provides students and recent alumni with a platform to pitch their business ideas and to develop skills in opportunity identification, customer and product development, market research, communication, and presentation skills.

Virginia Serious Game Institute Mobile Game Competition

This contest encourages students and recent alumni to develop game design ideas — and you don't even need to know how to code your game. Winners receive paid development time and move on to higher rounds, until the best of the best reach the Deans' Business Plan Competition.

LITE Pitch IT Competition

Is it "Pitch it" or "Pitch IT"? Both. The Laboratory for IT Entrepreneurship's Pitch IT competition takes place each spring. Teams prepare a pitch that includes information on the problem to be solved, the information technology-based solution, an analysis of competitors, and the competitive advantage of the innovation. A panel of judges composed of faculty, entrepreneurs, and other business experts selects the winners. The competition also includes a prize awarded by audience vote. Mason students competed for grants totaling $2,000 at the most recent Pitch IT competition.
